We understand that saying goodbye to a beloved pet is an emotional time. It can be hard to absorb all the information or even remember to ask questions. That’s why we’ve put together this collection of frequently asked questions about our home visits that we hope will help.
Is it a vet that will be at the appointment?
Yes, all home visits are carried out by qualified vets. We are a small, close-knit team, and when you book an appointment, you’ll know which vet will be visiting by name.
Do you offer any other veterinary services?
No, we are solely a home euthanasia service and do not provide other forms of veterinary care.
Can my other pets be present during the appointment?
This is a personal choice. Some people find that allowing other pets to be present helps them process the loss. However, if you feel they may become distressed or too bouncy, we recommend keeping them in a separate room until after the procedure. You can then bring them in to say goodbye afterward.
What happens during a home visit with Paws Over the Rainbow?
Upon arrival, we will take the time to greet you and your pet(s) and discuss the reason for the appointment. We always offer an examination of your pet if you need reassurance you are making the right decision.
We will then complete the necessary paperwork to ensure your preferred aftercare options are recorded.
When everyone is ready we administer a sedative injection under your pet’s skin in the scruff which is similar in sensation to a routine vaccination. The sedation takes around 15 minutes to take effect, making your pet comfortable and relaxed. Once they are peacefully sedated, we place a catheter in a vein and administer the final injection, which works quickly.
The vet will offer to give you some space and go sit in their car should you wish, so you and your family can say goodbye in privacy. If you have chosen cremation, we will transport your pet with dignity in a rigid bed we bring with us. For larger dogs, we may need assistance moving them into our vehicle. You also have the option to bury your pet at home.
How long does a home visit take?
Appointments typically last 45-60 minutes, but there is no set time limit which is why appointment times may vary slightly.
What is the cost of a home visit?
Our home euthanasia visit is priced at £330 (correct at time of posting). This fee remains the same regardless of when you book, including weekends, and we do not charge extra for mileage. Additional costs apply if you choose cremation. Current pricing details can be found on the prices section of our website.
How is payment made?
When the paperwork is completed at the start of the visit, we take an email address to send an invoice to which contains all the payment details. Payments can be made securely online via debit/credit card or bank transfer.
If preferred, cash or cheque payments can be made at the time of the visit.
Do you offer payment plans?
We do not typically provide payment plans. However, if you have financial concerns, speak to us and we may be able to offer guidance.
Can I take my pet to the crematorium myself?
Yes, but arrangements must be made directly with the crematorium. Most crematoriums require an appointment, so you cannot arrive unannounced.
Which crematorium do you use?
We primarily work with Kings Hill Crematorium near Market Bosworth/Nuneaton, on the Leicestershire/Warwickshire border. We can arrange individual cremations, where your pet is cremated on its own and you have the ashes back in either a scatter-tube or casket – or we can arrange a group cremation, where you do not get the ashes back. We can also offer either ink or clay paw prints from your pet. You are welcome to use a different crematorium but these arrangements should be made separately to our visit.
Where are you based?
Our primary location is Leicestershire, but we regularly visit Warwickshire, Staffordshire, South Derbyshire, and North Northamptonshire. If you are unsure whether we cover your area, please contact us.
How do I know if it’s the right time for my pet to be put to sleep?
This is a deeply personal and difficult decision. We are available by phone to offer guidance, and additional information can be found on our website – blog post – The Final Decision. Your regular vet may also provide insight.
How much notice should I give for a home euthanasia visit?
We recommend booking 2-3 days in advance to secure your preferred time. Pre-booking can also allow you to spend precious final days with your pet. However, we understand that advance booking isn’t always possible. We do our best to accommodate same-day requests and will suggest alternatives if we have no availability.
What if my pet dislikes injections or handling?
We are experienced at working with nervous and reactive animals. Please let us know in advance if this applies to your pet so we can make appropriate arrangements. In some cases, oral sedatives before the visit may help. If needed, we may ask for a muzzle during the sedative injection, which we can provide, but this is rare.
Will the visit be covered by my insurance?
Coverage depends on your specific insurance policy, but many plans include partial reimbursement. We process insurance claims free of charge and aim to complete them within two weeks.
What are your contact hours?
For non-urgent enquiries, email us at info@pawsovertherainbow.co.uk. Our phone lines are manned daily from 8AM to 6PM — please leave a message if we don’t answer, and we will return your call.
Do you offer evening and weekend visits?
Yes, but these appointments tend to be in high demand, so booking in advance is recommended.
Why is a sedation injection used?
It is important to us that your pet is as relaxed as they can be for our visit and that they pass peacefully and with dignity. Using a sedative injection allows us to do this and removes potential stress or discomfort by having a catheter placed in the vein.
How can I contact you?
You can call us at 07942077180.
If speaking on the phone is too upsetting, feel free to text or WhatsApp us – or email us on info@pawsovertherainbow.co.uk

Can my pet be cremated with personal belongings?
Yes, your pet can be transported on their own bed, though it will be disposed of at the crematorium. We can also provide our beds and blankets for transport. If you wish, your pet can be cremated with a favourite toy or blanket.
